How to Start a Podcast in Bangalore in 2026 and 2027: A Step-by-Step Guide
By Abhiram Chandramohan · · 6 min read
Short answer: pick a narrow topic you can talk about for 50 episodes, choose a format that fits your personality, record with good audio (a studio, or a quiet room and a decent microphone), edit for clarity rather than perfection, and publish on YouTube and Spotify on a fixed schedule. Then cut every episode into short clips. That is the whole system. The rest of this guide explains each step, using what we have learned launching 17 podcasters from the ObiiNxt studio in Bengaluru.
Why start a podcast in Bangalore now?
Bangalore has two things a podcaster needs: an audience that already listens to long-form content on the commute, and an unusual density of interesting guests. Founders, engineers, doctors, artists and educators are all within a short drive. A podcast is also one of the few formats that works in English, Kannada or both, which gives local creators room that national shows leave empty.
For professionals, the strongest reason is trust. People buy from, hire and refer those they have heard speak for an hour. A travel founder, a study-abroad consultant or a doctor with a show is no longer a stranger to their next client.
Step 1: How do I choose a podcast niche?
Choose the overlap between what you know deeply, what a specific group of people keeps asking about, and what you will still enjoy discussing in a year. "Business" is not a niche. "The real story behind Karnataka's small businesses" is. "Travel" is not a niche. "People who travel slowly and differently" is.
A quick test: write down 20 episode titles. If you struggle after 10, the topic is too narrow or not yours. If every title could belong to a hundred other shows, it is too broad.
Step 2: Which podcast format should I choose?
- Interview: you host, guests bring the stories. Easiest to sustain and great for networking. Most of the shows we launch start here.
- Solo: you teach or share opinions. Cheapest to produce, but demands strong preparation and confidence on camera.
- Co-hosted: two voices and natural banter. Fun to watch, but needs two calendars to agree every week.
- Panel or webinar style: several experts on one topic. Useful for education and B2B audiences.
If you are soft-spoken or new to the camera, the interview format is your friend. You ask the questions your audience would ask; the guest does most of the talking. That is exactly how we built #AskShivaKrishna for a study-abroad consultant who preferred working behind the scenes.
Step 3: What equipment do I need?
Audio matters more than video. Listeners forgive an average picture; they leave within a minute if the sound is echoey or muffled. A practical starting kit is a dynamic USB or XLR microphone per speaker, closed-back headphones, a simple audio interface for XLR microphones, and one or two cameras (a recent phone is fine to begin with) with soft, even light.
The room is the hidden cost. Bare walls and glass create echo that no plugin fully fixes. That is why many Bangalore creators record in a studio: you get treated acoustics, multi-camera video and lighting without buying or storing any of it.
Step 4: How do I record a good episode?
- Send your guest three or four themes in advance, not a script.
- Do a two-minute sound check and record a backup track.
- Open with a hook: the most interesting thing the guest will say, in one line.
- Ask follow-up questions. The best moments come from "why?" and "what happened next?".
- Record 45 to 70 minutes; you will cut it down.
Step 5: How should I edit a podcast?
Edit for clarity, not perfection. Remove long pauses, false starts and off-topic tangents; keep the personality. Balance volume between speakers, reduce background noise, and add a short intro and outro. For video, cut between cameras to follow the speaker. Then pull out three to five 30- to 60-second clips with captions for Reels, Shorts and LinkedIn. Clips are how most new listeners will find you.
Step 6: Where should I publish my podcast?
Publish the full video episode on YouTube, which is now the largest podcast platform in India, and the audio through a podcast host that distributes to Spotify, Apple Podcasts and others via an RSS feed. Write titles around what people search for ("Studying in France is easier than it looks" works better than "Episode 7"), add chapters, and keep a fixed day and time. Consistency beats volume: one good episode every two weeks, every two weeks, will outgrow three rushed episodes followed by silence.
Step 7: How do I grow and make money from a podcast?
Growth comes from three habits: clip every episode, ask every guest to share their episode, and collaborate with other shows. Money usually follows the audience in this order:
- Your own business first. For most professionals the show pays for itself through clients, students or partners it brings in.
- Sponsorships and brand integrations once you have a clearly defined audience.
- Platform revenue from YouTube once you qualify.
- Memberships, events and paid communities for loyal listeners.
What does it look like in practice?
Two of the shows we produce show the range. The Shalini Mishra Show is hosted by the founder of Journýway, a slow-travel company; each episode features a traveller whose story proves her philosophy. #AskShivaKrishna puts a study-abroad consultant across the table from university representatives and consulate officials. Different industries, same system: a clear niche, an interview format, studio recording, careful editing and consistent distribution. Should I do it myself or get help?
You can absolutely start alone with a phone and a microphone. What usually stops people is not skill but time: booking guests, setting up, editing and publishing every single week. If you want to learn the craft properly, our 30-class Become a Podcaster program in Bangalore takes you from concept to a live show recorded in our studio. If you would rather focus on hosting, we can run the studio, production, editing and distribution for you.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to start a podcast in Bangalore?
You can start with a phone, a single microphone and free editing software. Costs rise with video quality, studio time and editing help. Renting a studio is usually cheaper than building a treated room at home.
How long should a podcast episode be?
Long enough to say something useful, short enough to keep attention. Most interview shows land between 30 and 60 minutes.
Can I start a podcast in Kannada?
Yes. Regional-language shows face far less competition, and audiences are loyal. Shows like 4 Cast Kannada and Antahkaruna, both launched from our studio, are in Kannada.
