Google Ads vs Meta Ads for Small Businesses in India: Which Should You Start With?

Start with Google Ads if people already search for what you sell. Start with Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) if they need to see it before they know they want it. Most Indian small businesses end up using both, but in a specific order. Here is how to decide.

Google Ads vs Meta Ads for Small Businesses in India: Which Should You Start With?

Short answer: start with Google Ads if people already search for what you sell ("dentist near me", "CA for GST filing in Jayanagar"). Start with Meta Ads on Facebook and Instagram if your product needs to be seen before people know they want it (a new snack brand, a fashion label, a workshop). Most small businesses in India eventually use both: Google to capture demand that exists, Meta to create new demand and to remarket to people who visited.

How are Google Ads and Meta Ads different?

The difference is intent. On Google, the customer tells you what they want by typing it. On Instagram and Facebook, the customer is scrolling, and your ad interrupts them with something they did not ask for.

When should a small business choose Google Ads first?

  • You offer a service people search for urgently: clinics, repairs, legal, accounting, coaching, real estate.
  • Your customers are local and search with "near me".
  • You can answer the phone or WhatsApp quickly, because search leads go cold fast.

Search ads can work on a modest budget because you only pay when someone who searched clicks. The catch is that competitive keywords in Bangalore can be expensive, so tight targeting and good landing pages matter.

When should a small business choose Meta Ads first?

  • Your product is visual or new, and people need to see it to want it.
  • You sell online across India, not just locally.
  • You can produce simple, honest creative: phone-shot reels often beat polished ads.
  • You want to build an audience you can retarget later.

How should I split a small budget?

A sensible starting pattern for a business testing both:

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: put most of the budget where intent is (Google for services, Meta for visual products) and a small share on the other platform as a test.
  2. Weeks 5 to 8: look at cost per lead or cost per sale, not clicks or likes. Move money toward whatever brings customers at an acceptable cost.
  3. From then on: add remarketing on Meta to people who visited from Google. It is usually the cheapest conversion you will get.

What mistakes waste the most money?

  • No conversion tracking. If you cannot see which ad produced which lead, you are guessing. Set up GA4 events and platform pixels before you spend.
  • Boosting posts instead of running campaigns. The "Boost" button is convenient but gives you far less control than Ads Manager.
  • Broad keywords on Google. "Shoes" will burn budget; "running shoes for flat feet Bangalore" may not.
  • Sending ads to the home page. Send people to a page that matches the ad and asks for one action.
  • Judging too early. Give a campaign enough spend and days to learn before switching it off.

Should I run ads myself or hire someone?

For a very small budget, learning the basics yourself is worthwhile; you will at least know what good looks like. As spend grows, a trained performance marketer pays for themselves by cutting waste. Either way, the skill is learnable: it is a mix of setup, testing, reading numbers and writing good ads.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper, Google Ads or Meta Ads?

Meta often has a lower cost per click, but Google clicks usually carry more intent. Compare cost per customer, not cost per click.

Can I run Google Ads for a local shop in Bangalore?

Yes. Use location targeting around your area, local keywords, call extensions and your Google Business Profile.

How long before ads start working?

Search ads can bring leads within days. Meta campaigns usually need a week or two of learning and creative testing.
