AI Tools for Lawyers in India: What They Do Well, Where They Fail, and How to Start
By Abhiram Chandramohan · · 4 min read
Short answer: AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can help advocates in India summarise long judgments, draft first versions of notices, agreements and petitions, structure arguments, translate documents and handle practice admin. They are unreliable at finding and citing case law from memory and can invent judgments that do not exist. Used as a fast junior whose every output you verify, AI can save hours each week.
What can AI do well for an advocate?
Summarise judgments and documents
Paste a judgment you have downloaded from an official source and ask for the facts, issues, ratio and outcome in a structured format. AI handles long documents well and can compare two judgments side by side. You still read the key paragraphs yourself.
Draft first versions
Legal notices, reply notices, simple agreements, cover letters and client emails follow patterns. Give the AI your facts and a template, and it produces a clean first draft in seconds. Your expertise goes into the review.
Structure arguments
Ask AI to organise your points into a logical outline, anticipate the other side's arguments, or test your reasoning for gaps. It is a useful sparring partner before a hearing.
Translate and simplify
AI can translate documents between English and Indian languages and explain legal positions in plain language for clients. Have a fluent reader check anything that will be filed or relied on.
Run the practice
Client intake forms, fee letters, case status updates, checklists and internal processes are all faster with AI.
Where does AI fail?
- Invented citations. General chatbots can produce realistic-looking case names and citations that do not exist. Courts in several countries have sanctioned lawyers for filing such citations. Never cite anything you have not read in an official or trusted database.
- Outdated law. A model's knowledge has a cut-off date. Amendments, new criminal laws and recent judgments may be missing or confused.
- Jurisdiction. AI often mixes Indian law with English or American law unless you are explicit.
- Confidence without accuracy. Answers sound authoritative whether or not they are right.
What about client confidentiality?
Advocates owe a duty of confidentiality to clients. Before using any AI tool, check how it stores and uses your data, prefer team or enterprise accounts with training on your data switched off, and remove client names and identifying details from prompts where possible. When in doubt, do not paste it.

How should I start?
- Pick one repetitive task, such as summarising judgments or drafting notices.
- Use it on non-confidential or anonymised material for two weeks.
- Build a small library of prompts and templates that work for your practice.
- Expand to the next task once the first is reliable.

Frequently asked questions
Can AI replace lawyers?
No. It speeds up drafting and reading, but judgement, advocacy, strategy and responsibility remain with the advocate.
Is it ethical for advocates to use AI?
Using tools to work efficiently is not new. The duties remain the same: competence, honesty to the court, and client confidentiality.
Can AI draft a petition?
It can produce a structured first draft from your facts and grounds. Every fact, provision and citation must be checked by you.
